REGISTRATION INFORMATION 2016-2017
On Monday, February 22nd, 2016 Topsail High School will be hosting a Registration and Curriculum Fair from 5:15-8:00 that will showcase our academic programs, as well as, provide an in-depth explanation of the registration process for the 2016-17 school year. Students will also receive their teacher recommendations for core classes that evening.
It will begin with two general sessions at 5:15 and transition at 6:00 to breakout sessions with teachers, clubs organizations, Counselors, and other academic opportunities focusing on next school year.
On Thursday March 3rd, Counselors will begin grade level assemblies and one-on-one meetings with all students to explain the registration process for next year’s classes. At each assembly, students will receive a registration packet to bring home. Included in this packet is a list of instructions and accompanying deadlines. Please review the information in this packet with your student.
1.) Carefully read the entire Pender County Schools High School Course Catalog to become familiar with all course requirements and course offerings. Please note that the guide lists all courses offered in Pender County. Check the Topsail High School registration form to see which of those courses are offered at Topsail High. Link to Course Catalog: http://www.pendercountyschools.net/students.
2.) Pay close attention to credit requirements for high school graduation, as well as the minimum admission requirements for the North Carolina University System.
3.) With the Registration Form as the template, use the above listed information to facilitate Parent/Student discussion regarding course selections. Student grade level will play a large role in available course options.
*** It is important to note that final course placement will be based on prior course performance and teacher recommendation. Teacher recommendations will be based on each individual student’s grade in the previous course in the sequence. Students wishing to take Honors level courses are reminded that they need to have earned an “A” or “B” in their previous Honors course or an “A” in their previous standard courses. For example, to take Honors English III, a student must make an “A” or “B” in Honors English II or an “A” in standard English II.
AP COURSES: Students interested in signing up for an AP (Advanced Placement) course(s) need to be aware that these courses are college-level courses and are designed for those students willing to put in extra time and effort (extensive reading, writing, and research) necessary to succeed. Students must meet the prerequisites as outlined in the Pender County Course Catalog. The following AP courses have a “lead in” honors level course required: Research Biology for AP Biology, Research Chemistry for AP Chemistry, Honors World Humanities for AP World History, and Turning Points in History for AP US History.
To apply for online courses through NCVPS, see Mr. Rochelle (room B120)
To apply for a Career & College Promise course through Cape Fear Community College (rising juniors and seniors only), see Mrs. Wullenwaber in Student Services.
To apply for Yearbook or Journalism, see Mrs. Skiba Phillips (room H118).
To apply for Teacher Cadet, see Ms. Burke (room H108).
To apply for Electric Vehicles, see Mr. Jeffcoat (room H127).
Advanced level fine arts courses (Dance, Visual Arts, Theater, Band, Vocal Music), see teacher of record.
REMEMBER TO TAKE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS SERIOUSLY! Next year drop/add will be extremely limited, so once schedules are set in August, changes will not be made except in special circumstances approved by administration. Ask questions now about your schedule and make wise choices about the courses you need.
DO NOT PICK A COURSE THAT YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO TAKE! Course overloads and schedule conflicts may make it impossible for us to put you in your first choice courses and therefore force us to schedule you in your alternate courses. CHOOSE WISELY.
A PARENT/GUARDIAN MUST SIGN YOUR REGISTRATION FORM. This is required by the county office! Your registration form is not complete without it.
